Mystic, 1931-2021

A painter, sculptor, ceramicist, and tapestry artist, Michel Debiève, worked within the realms of Surrealism and Expressionism, creating a body of work that bridges dreamlike imagery with emotive form. A graduate of the School of Fine Arts in Valenciennes, he developed a multidisciplinary practice that reflected both technical mastery and a deeply imaginative spirit.

The twin brother of artist Raymond Debiève, he was part of a generation of French artists exploring bold new expressions in postwar Europe. His work has been exhibited widely, including joint exhibitions with Giacometti in Cannes (1953) and Jean Lurçat at Galerie La Demeure in Paris, as well as with Chaissac and Paressant at Galeries Michel Columb.

His pieces are held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Nantes and Valenciennes, and he is listed in both Davenport’s and Benezit.
